KID CHAMELEON | FIGHTING FANTASY

FIGHTING FANTASY GAME BOOKS

2mhikk7

I remember the first Fighting Fantasy book I purchased. It was at some random charity store, and came to around Β£5 – which was quite a lot for a six year old – though, it was technically two books… as it was a quirky “two-player” concept (that didn’t work very well, and luckily proved to be a one-off within the series). Even though I was unable to properly play the book, the fact that I was able to try to play it anywhere was incredibly appealing (as I didn’t have a Game Boy at the time), and on the family’s numerous long drives I would have a little adventure in the back seat. Killing some trolls and whatnot.

Image2

Over the years, and plentiful trips to car boot sales and the like, I managed to amass an incredibly comprehensive collection (approximately 80% of the original series at one point adorned my shelf). As I grew up, however, and video game consoles took over, I eventually threw my collection out – seeking to make room on my bookcase for video cassettes and Playstation games, which had become my new “collection”. I regretted it nearly immediately, and soon realized that purchasing the books had become a much more difficult affair than it had been when I was younger. Luckily, for me, the series was revived in 2002, and my mother knew me enough to purchase the set for my birthday.

1973-361
For anyone who hasn’t played a Fighting Fantasy book, they’re incredibly similar to the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, that everyone has played at least once – with the main difference being the addition of rpg elements; like statistics, an inventory, and the occasional battle, or “saving roll”. Assuming you don’t cheat while playing, they can be an incredibly enjoyable experience. While the series was primarily based in the fantasy genre, there were also numerous sci-fi, modern, and horror installments to break the monotony – most of which also had their own unique “gimmicks” to keep things fresh.

The series itself was created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone – although by the end of it’s run they began to write a smaller portion of the books. Nonetheless, my favorites were almost always written by one of the two. While I can’t remember every book now, I can remember most of my favorites – though, luckily, with enough gaps in my memory to still be able to play them without spoilers. In particular, my favorite books were part of the “Sorcery!” series, penned by solely by Steve Jackson. For anyone interested, the first two parts of the Sorcery! series can now be purchased on iOS, Android and Kindle.

KID CHAMELEON | TOP 5 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAMES

No. 5) SONIC CHRONICLES: DARK BROTHERHOOD
A hard title to place, I settled on 5th place simply due to the game’s lack of replayability. Sonic Chronicles was a brilliant merging of Sonic’s unique aspects with RPG elements – something I was wary of right from the start. While it was a little easy for the most part, it was pulled together so well in other places that you could almost forgive the eventual ease of the battles – which only really became an issue near the end of the game, once your characters had reached their full potential. With a wealth of secrets, references, and character development, this could easily be the greatest Sonic spin-off I’ve played.

No. 4) SONIC ADVANCE
The first portable Sonic game I ever owned, and one which evolved the ideas of Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the way you would have expected of Sonic 4. An additional character, new abilities for the mainstays, and numerous multi-route levels to explore however you see fit.Β  My only real disappointment was in the lack of story, although certain moments did still retain a glimpse of the cinematic feel it’s forebearer held – such as the appearance of Mecha Knuckles in Angel Island Zone, and the time-limit inducing launch gimmick in Egg Rocket Zone. The best 2D installment, since the conclusion of the Mega Drive era.

No. 3) SONIC ADVENTURE 2: BATTLE
The sequel to Sonic Adventure was, to me, definitely a more polished and streamlined product, with an improved plot, and less “unnecessary” gameplay styles. However, it always felt like it was just missing “something” to me. The lack of adventure fields, for instance, and the inability to explore the same levels with different characters. The new levels did seemingly allow the developers to tailor them much more specifically to the three gameplay styles – making each experience a much more focused one – but it just didn’t feel like it had that sense of “adventure”, ironically enough, that Adventure did.

No. 2) SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES
The epitome of 2D Sonic gameplay, the second/third game in the “Death Egg Trilogy”, when combined, truly felt more-or-less perfect to me, as far as the system’s capabilities were concerned. With each character having different exploratory abilities, and each stage having multiple routes, and hidden areas, the game had a lot to discover – and encouraged the use of different characters to explore the levels in different ways. Also, the cinematic way in which the levels transitioned from one another was minimalist enough not to interrupt the game flow, but still managed to establish a sense of story.

No. 1) SONIC ADVENTURE
Sonic’s first fully-3D outing will always hold a dear place in my heart. It took the varied playstyles of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and expanded the concept to create 6 characters with completely distinct gameplay styles, while still allowing them to play through the same levels, with minor variations. The adventure field/action stage structure really aided in the sense of immersion, and the addition of collectable emblems, and the Chao Garden, guaranteed the game would have replay value far beyond the initial playthrough. I still go back to this game today, in a futile attempt to earn just one or two more emblems…

KID CHAMELEON | BOULDER DASH EX

15472_front

It’s not exactly my usual game choice, but I’ve been playing Boulder Dash EX for the Game Boy Advance recently… and it’s actually rather good. I’m sure most people have played some variant of Boulder Dash at some point in their life, and it’s hard to deny that it’s a classic. Boulder Dash EX features the original game as an added extra, but having already played it I went straight to the “EX Game”, which – due to it’s inherent simplicity – I am going to review (in a rather basic fashion), as opposed to documenting my progress, as I plan to with other games later on.

bdash

The “EX Game” consists of two main parts, Story Mode and Battle Mode. Lacking the opportunity to play with someone, my understanding of Battle Mode is a little limited, but it seems to fairly straight-forward, with 2-4 players competing in a small “arena”, trying to collect as many jewels as possible, and drop boulders on their enemies to make them lose points. Nothing revolutionary, but then again no part of this game is revolutionary – it’s not meant to be.

1186

Indeed, by today’s standards, Boulder Dash is very much a “casual game” – and the game’s Story Mode doesn’t make much of an attempt to change this fact. It’s pretty standard fare, and only strays from the “Boulder Dash formula” in a few ways.

The first notable addition is that of enemies. While the original game did feature numerous traps they, for the most part, all followed a fairly similar pattern. EX’s Story Mode features a wide variety of different enemies – who all follow unique patterns, and react to the player’s actions differently. Memorizing these patterns, and learning to predict how each monster will react to a change in environment, adds a new layer of strategy to the game which is definitely welcome.

Boulder Dash EX-2

The second change comes in the form of items. Again, none of these are particularly “unique”, but they all add to the gameplay in a simple, yet definite, way – without over complicating things. With effects such as rotating the screen (and thus changing “gravity”), destroying boulders, and grabbing distant objects, these items allow the game to challenge the player in more numerous ways than the standard formula was able to – whilst always keeping that formula as the primary focus.

url

Boulder Dash (the original) didn’t have a story, so to speak. And it didn’t need to. EX doesn’t need to either, but the way in which it is implemented means that is surprisingly un-intrusive. While the “plot” – if you can call it that – is about as unoriginal as you can get, it actually manages to do its job quite succinctly. It gives the player their motivation (to save the hero’s love interest), and their goal (to collect the “jewels” spread across the world, in order to repair a magic mirror, and save the aforementioned damsel-in-distress). Entirely generic, yes, but it does what it needs to. And in a time where some games seem to have more cutscenes than gameplay, it’s incredibly refreshing to play a game in which the storyline consists of, more or less, just a beginning and an end.

KID CHAMELEON | SKYLAR KERGIL

I don’t spend as much time on YouTube as I used to, or – perhaps more accurately – I don’t spend as much time watching vloggers. However, I stumbled upon SkylarkEleven (A.K.A – Skylar Kergil) recently, and I’ve found his videos incredibly refreshing. A trans activist, musician and poet, Kergil documented his transition from female to male in an incredibly honest, and revealing, way, and he has created many videos which help to enlighten the uninformed, and aid trans individuals in dealing with the various struggles they may have to face. I’ve always considered myself an egalitarian individual, but sadly the struggles of trans people was something I had a very limited understanding of. Of course I empathized, but as I had never experienced it myself, it was something I was always rather ignorant of. I had a general understanding of the more obvious “issues”, but due to the fact that I’d had no contact with the trans community, and never knew any openly trans individuals, I’ve always been a little “presumptuous” – and I’m glad I came across Kergil’s videos because they have helped to open my eyes, and expanded my understanding of the LGBTQ community beyond my previous limits. I recommend visiting “SkylarkEleven” on YouTube, not just for the aforementioned reasoning, but also because he’s a pretty kick-ass singer and poet. So, if for some crazy reason you don’t want to broaden your horizons, at least give his music a listen, and see what you think! πŸ™‚

KID CHAMELEON | HE-MAN & THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

Even though I was born in the 90’s, as a child the 80’s was the main source of much of my entertainment. While most kids were watching Dexter’s Laboratory, I was watching Dungeons & Dragons, and while they read Power Rangers annuals, I had Thundercats. Of course, I was hardly unaware of “current” television. It’s just that most of the shows that interested me (besides Pokemon and Digimon, which were impossible to avoid) were also unavailable to me – and thus I could only watch shows like Sailor Moon and X-Men: The Animated Series when my grandmother was able to record them for me (due to her having Sky, which neither of my parents had at the time). Whilst having somewhat “outdated” interests made it hard to relate to the other children a lot of the time (It took me over a year to finally watch Pokemon, by which time most kids were bored of talking about the show, and only wanted to play the game), there was always something that appealed to me in knowing that I had something they didn’t, so for the most part it never really bothered me. Heck, I’m still pretty much that way now! XD

He-Man wasn’t shown on television when I was a child – which was rather lucky, as had it been I probably wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see it. Instead, I got my “fix” through various video tapes, books, and what toys could be found during our regular trips to car-boot sales while on holiday. He-Man was actually the franchise I was able to watch the least – I only had one or two cassettes, and the Secret of the Sword movie – but I made up for this fact with my rather extensive collection of Ladybird Books, which – to my knowledge – I had a complete set of. I read the hell out of those bloody things.

Being a child, I didn’t take particularly good care of many of my toys – which is a rather sickening fact, considering just how much money He-Man toys can make on Ebay these days. Nonetheless, I enjoyed them at the time, and I suppose that’s all that matters. A part of me did briefly consider re-collecting the figures, out of nostalgia, but sadly the majority seem rather out of my price range – and being the completionist that I am, I’d rather have none of them, than some of them. Still, maybe one day… if I’m ever rich.

he-man

I recently found myself re-watching the He-Man cartoons. Every now and then I take some time away from whatever TV show or anime I’m currently watching to re-watch something from my childhood. It’s always nice to refresh my memory, and interesting to see how these old shows hold up now that I’m older. Some of them do feel a little silly, once I remember that I’m 22 years old, but there have been a few that I can still watch with equal – if not greater – enthusiasm. I’m not actually sure where He-Man stands in that regard. Obviously I do love it (otherwise why would I even be talking about it?), but it does have a lot of issues in regards to quality – both in it’s scripts, and it’s animations. Some episodes definitely hold up to scrutiny better than others. It is, however, always interesting to watch it’s use of limited animation, and stock footage. While it does come off as a tad lazy and/or cheap, when you consider it was animated by a pretty prolific company (at the time) – Filmation – it does make me wonder if similar techniques could be used in the present day to allow single individuals, or small groups, to produce their own animation on a similar scale – with story taking priority over “perfect” animation.

Anyway, as my last point, I would simply like to recommend that you watch an episode or two of He-Man. I don’t expect it will be to everyone’s taste, but if only from a purely animated stand-point, I think you should watch it, so as to gain a deeper appreciation of how far animation has come over the years. And, of course, if you happen to be a fan of barbarians, or sword & sorcery, there’s a chance you might just enjoy it. Episodes can currently be watched for free on the Official He-Man YouTube Channel… so there’s no excuse not to give it a look! Below is the first episode, “Diamond Ray of Disappearance”.
